Lonnie Wheatley, INDIANAPOLIS, Ind. (April 19, 2018) – Coming off the heels of his third overall win of the young season in last weekend’s Kokomo Grand Prix, Tyler Courtney gets back into Sprint Car action with a pair of Indiana events this weekend.
“Sunshine” and the Clauson-Newman-Marshall Racing Priority Aviation No. 7bc Sprint Car team will take a shot at Friday night’s “No Way Out 40” $10,000 winner’s share at Brownstown Speedway before resuming USAC National Sprint Car action at Montpelier Motor Speedway on Saturday night.
“I’m looking forward to getting back in the Sprint Car, it seems like it has been a while,” Courtney commented.
It has been some time indeed, no thanks to Mother Nature and a run of inclement weather. Courtney’s last Sprint Car action came in February’s opening set of USAC events in Florida, where he reached victory lane in two of three events.
Courtney made another trip to victory lane last Friday night in USAC National Midget action before Saturday’s event was washed out.
The prestigious Kokomo Grand Prix victory aboard the Clauson-Marshall Racing Driven2SaveLives/Indiana Donor Network No. 7bc Midget was Sunshine’s third score of the year in just eleven starts.
“We made the most of the weekend by getting the win on Friday night,” Courtney commented. “It was what we needed after the first race at Du Quoin.”
After slipping back to sixth in the early going of the Kokomo Grand Prix feature, Courtney was soon on the move toward the front.
“I ran bottom to the middle early,” Courtney says. “They left my lane open on the bottom, so I let those guys worry about each other and raced my own race. I was able to get into the lead and do my own thing.”
It wasn’t without tension though, as a dicey moment in traffic and a late caution made Courtney earn the win.
“I had to just pucker down and play defense those last few laps,” Courtney recalls. “I had a really good car again.”
Courtney hopes to carry that momentum into this weekend with a $10,000 winner’s share on the line Friday at Brownstown and then valuable USAC National Sprint Car points looming on Saturday.
“Sunshine” has shown speed at both, finishing second in last year’s “No Way Out 40” at Brownstown and picking up a USAC Midget win at Montpelier.
“I’ve gone pretty good each time at Brownstown and Tim (Clauson) won the last couple of times he was there with Bryan, so I feel like we should be good,” Courtney explains. “Montpelier is a fun place too, I’m excited about this weekend.”
2018 Quick Stats: 11 races, 3 wins, 6 top-fives, 6 top-tens.
Up Next: “No Way Out 40” non-wing Sprint Cars at Brownstown (IN) Speedway on Friday night; USAC National Sprint Cars at Montpelier (IN) Motor Speedway on Saturday night.
