Lonnie Wheatley, INDIANAPOLIS, Ind. (June 28, 2018) – After a rare idle weekend, Tyler Courtney is back aboard the Clauson-Marshall Racing Driven2SaveLives/Indiana Donor Network No. 7bc Midget for this weekend’s POWRi Midget League events in Illinois.
It will mark Sunshine’s first Midget action since USAC’s Indiana Midget Week and should prove an excellent tuneup for the upcoming USAC Midget swing though Oklahoma, Kansas, Nebraska and Missouri on July 10-15.
Action is set for Macon Speedway on Saturday night and then Lincoln Speedway on Sunday night.
“It’s a couple of racy places, so hopefully we can go over there and pick off a win or two,” Courtney says.
Courtney’s most recent action came with the six-race USAC Sprint Car “Eastern Storm” that worked its way through Pennsylvania, New Jersey and New York on June 14 through June 19. It was another strong week for Courtney and the Clauson-Marshall-Newman Racing Priority Aviation No. 7bc Sprint Car team, finishing third in overall points for the week and picking up a $500 bonus the week’s Pass Master Award.
“We had a really good week. We were fast every night and only had one night outside of the top five,” Courtney recalls. “We didn’t win one but overall we maintained out position in points.”
USAC Sprint Car action resumes with a July 6 event at Putnamville, Indiana’s Lincoln Park Speedway before Indiana Sprint Week takes center stage on July 20 through July 28.
Courtney’s Eastern Storm concluded with four consecutive podium finishes after opening with a fourth-place run at Grandview Speedway on June 14 and then an eighth-place showing Williams Grove Speedway on June 15.
From there, “Sunshine” was among the lead pack the rest of the way with finishes of third at Port Royal Speedway, third at BAPS Motor Speedway, third at Bridgeport Speedway and then second from 11th in the Eastern Storm finale at New York’s Weedsport Speedway on June 19.
Over the course of the week, Courtney picked off four heat race wins and 25 positions in feature action including nine in the finale, eight positions in the opener at Grandview and six spots at BAPS Motor Speedway.
“We’ve got the racing part figured out pretty well, now if I can figure out how to qualify a little better to put us in a better position for the features we’ll be in good shape,” Courtney commented.
With “Eastern Storm” in the books, Courtney sits in a tie for second in USAC National Sprint Car points and is just 38 points off the lead pace.
“There’s still a lot of season left, we’ll keep plugging away at it,” Courtney explains.
This weekend, attention shifts back to Midgets with POWRi action in Illinois. “Sunshine” already has one win among a handful of top-four finishes in Midget competition this season. He’ll be looking to add to that on Saturday and Sunday.
